I began a quest to document Antarctica’s icebergs, determine a direction of travel and how long they would survive before melting. Most icebergs are created when large pieces of ice calve from glaciers ore ice shelves.

The Drift of Giants
Major iceberg calving zones include the Ronne Ice Shelf, Ross Ice Shelf, and Larsen Ice Shelf.
Many of these icebergs ultimately float into the South Ocean, South Atlantic, Pacific Ocean or Indian Ocean. These icebergs have a life span of a few months to decades depending on their size and other factors.
Slow Disintegration
When entering and leaving the Antarctic Peninsula, it is easy to find these giants floating north into warmer waters as they slowly disintegrate.
